Safe operating procedures for all projects

SOPs

  • Safe operating procedures are established once there has been an investigation of a particular hazardous task, and from there, the scope of how the work will be performed is established.
Method statement before waste management plan is created

Method Statements

  • A short method statement is created and discussed with supervisors to highlight all risks and hazards, so as to establish a safe action plan for when the risk assessment gets done.
All staff wear protective gear

PPE

  • All PPEs are inspected on a weekly basis and any damaged ones are replaced and signed for
  • Weekly discussions are held on risk prevention
  • PPE takes place with demonstration on use
All staff are trained for waste management

Training

  • Staff are trained to a level of basic competence, and then sent for specialised training, in the likes of Confined Spaces and Working at Heights, etc.
  • All new equipment is demonstrated, used in training, and then used for testing to ensure competency
Project meetings

Daily Meetings

  • Discussions on all specialised Safe Work Procedures for all imminent tasks
  • Discussions on the risk assessment for a particular task
  • Toolbox talk for key hazards on particular task are also covered
Project meetings

Weekly Meetings

  • PPE inspections and key equipment inspections take place
  • Vehicle inspections take place
  • Near Miss discussions on the importance of any near misses that have occurred or potentially could have occurred
Risk assessments for all waste removal projects

Risk Assessments

  • All hazards and potential hazards are identified and listed in a full baseline risk assessment of a particular project, with preventative action plans in place in order to minimise risk
  • The risk assessment is discussed in detail with the relevant staff on the preceding day, and key hazards are highlighted on site
Certified as a hazardous waste transporter

Certifications

  • Confined Space certification
  • Working at Height certification
  • Gauteng Certificate of Registration – General and Hazardous waste transporter
  • Disposal and discharge permits from various municipalities such as City of Joburg, Ekurhuleni, Tshwane
Waste management plan for all projects
